About Ekalavya Bal Shikshan And Arogya Nyasa (EN)

Trust established in the year 2002. It is registered under Mumbai Public Trust Act 1950 – Registration no. E–3837, Pune, India.

Building Child’s Tomorrow – is our mission Statement. EN has constantly witnessed that these children carry a social stigma. EN wants to free these children of this burden and wants the society to accept them wholeheartedly. These children do not know much about the world other than the one in which they grow up. EN wants to show them the alternative mode of life, so that the child can come out of the filthy situations in which they live. EN wants to prevent a child from becoming a CSW or a pimp. We believe this is possible by promoting self–reliance and supporting activities that highlight the needs of the most vulnerable and distressed.

EN works for the children of:

  • Commercial Sex Workers (CSW)
  • Alcoholics
  • Street children
  • Single parents
  • Physically challenged parents

Vision

"Child, give me your hand, so that I may walk in the light that you show me" – Mahatma Gandhi

A healthy and an enlightened child is a vision EN has as its core dream. Education, healthy environment, proper nourishment and affectionate supporters will make this dream come true. Though the circumstances around the child are not very bright as of today, we at EN want to brighten up every child's life by eradicating fear from his/her heart.

Goals and Objectives

Our goal is to empower these children to become self–reliant and live a respectable life.

Our objectives are:

  • Help 100 children improve their health status
  • Help 50 children improve their academic performance
  • Help 200 children to improve their social skills for better interpersonal relations
  • Make sure that 50 dropouts continue their education, OR provide them with alternate career options

Our Trustees

  • Renu Gavaskar (President)
  • Siddhartha Shetye (Treasurer)
  • Himani Raichur (Secretary)

At the moment Eklavya Nyasa takes care and looks after 100 children. There are three centres (Somwar Peth, Shukrawar Peth and Dhayari) where these projects are carried out. We feel that the number of the workers is less compared to the workload. We will be highly obliged if the remuneration of the certain posts will be paid to us (to be appointed).

The journey of Ekalavya Nyasa

Down the memory lane the journey of Ekalavya Nyasa arouses reminiscences of the children from so many deprived strata of the society. Ekalavya Nyasa has its origin in Aamhi Yuva - an NGO based in Mumbai. It all started when Renu Gavaskar, a young enthusiast noticed children (all boys) between the age group of 12 to 18 years requesting her from behind the bars to come to their institution. The institution was David Sassoon Industrial School, Matunga, Mumbai. At that time the children were called delinquent kids. Currently, the word Delinquent is prohibited in the book of law. A most positive change in the world of children.

When Renu Gavaskar entered the institution a new world was open to her which she aptly calls as her Vidyapeeth (University). David Sassoon showed her the way to go ahead in this field. She continued going there for a span of 20 years. At the same time she started visiting many corporation schools in the area as well as all the seven branches (including David Sassoon) of the Children’s Aid Society. She fondly remembers that during those days so many young groups joined her. Aamhi Yuva, an NGO, was established to create a better world for the little ones.

A day in the life of Bharat ...
A day in the life of Bharat ...
crying child

It is 6:00 am. Bharat wakes up. He looks around and finds his mother and her ‘partner' fast asleep. He tries to move about the only room where he and his mother live, very carefully. Because he knows that if he makes the slightest sound, his mother will wake up, and without asking him anything, she will just give him two tight slaps and lots of bad words. He reaches for his books and starts studying. Slowly and carefully turning pages. He feels extremely thirsty but doesn't dare to get a glass of water. Because the sound of water jug might just disturb his mother's sleep. After all, she has slept around 4:00 am, after attending to her last ‘customer'. Bharat's mother is a Commercial Sex Worker (CSW). She is an alcoholic too. Bharat is trying hard to concentrate on his studies, but even the soft sound of his books wakes up his mother and Bharat gets another dose of his daily beating! He doesn't complain. His mother's partner gets up and he too slaps him as hard as he can. They go back to bed. Bharat quietly goes back to study.
It is 10:00 am now. Bharat is starving. But he packs his school bag and heads for school. Bharat is a good student. In school, he tries to focus on his studies, but it's hard to focus with an empty stomach.
It is almost evening time. Bharat returns home. He is very hungry. His mother is at the door. She makes him go out and buy some snacks. Then, she and Bharat eat it. Mother does not even exchange a single word of warmth, instead abuses him whenever she can. Bharat is restless now. Because it is time for him to get out of the house as his mother may get a ‘customer' any time. He is too tired and exhausted. But he has no choice. He is out on the streets… waiting to go home and sleep when it is the ‘right' time.
